How does CBD and coffee work?

Globally it’s estimated that over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed every day. Caffeine, the active ingredient in coffee, is by far the most famous stimulant on earth.

No other stimulant comes close to the popularity of caffeine, and it’s probably our obsession with productivity that is to blame for our high caffeine consumption. The hustle and bustle of Hong Kong life and work means that we’re increasingly reliant on coffee to help us keep up with this hectic pace.

Caffeine helps us wake up early in the morning for work, focus more intently at work, and even allows us to work longer hours by delaying fatigue – but caffeine is far from perfect.

Most people who drink coffee are familiar with side effects, which can leave you feeling jittery and anxious; sometimes, you feel your heart skipping beats or pounding out of your chest.

It’s these effects that harm our ability to be productive, and  prevent the very reason for using it, and this is where CBD comes in. CBD is ideal for eliminating these negative effects and allowing the caffeine to do the job we wanted it to in the first place.

The Science

A few critical neurotransmitters in the brain control our mental alertness, and one of the most important is adenosine. As more adenosine builds up, our neurons become progressively slower at sending messages, making us feel sluggish and tired.

Caffeine works by obstructing the effects of adenosine by connecting to the receptors themselves, thereby preventing adenosine from doing its job, keeping us awake when otherwise we would feel tired.

More research is needed to truly understand how CBD oil can enhance caffeine-induced alertness despite what we know.

How should you add CBD to your coffee?

The best way to include CBD into your coffee is by adding a couple of drops of water-soluble CBD into your drink. CBD by its nature is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t mix well into water. Therefore, in order to mix CBD into a beverage such as coffee or tea – you’ll need a water-soluble CBD product. At Found, we use Liquid LIFE which mixeless seamlessly into beverages and allows you to integrate CBD without destroying your favorite coffee taste.

Liquid LIFE is also more easily absorbed by the body, as in order to become water-soluble it’s molecules are made into nano-particles which allows for easy absorption by the body, delivering faster onset times and less wastage.

How does CBD affect the taste of coffee?

Historically, CBD coffee hasn’t tasted great, and no one wants to drink coffee with a nasty, bitter aftertaste. However, things are changing, with more and more cafes and F&B establishments   using specialty water-soluble CBD liquid in their beverages. These water-soluble products have been designed not to have a hugely bitter after-taste. However, not all water-soluble products are made equally and some perform better than others in terms of mixing into beverages, flavour and delivering CBD effectively.
